Is the recent unrest on many campuses a symptom of a deeper illness? The heart of Anglo-American university education has long been the liberal arts. A ͞liberal͟ education is one that teaches logical and critical thinking and expands the context of knowledge of the student, in addition to developing expertise in a focused area. Can liberal education survive in a post-modernist era?
In this talk, Stephen Hicks will discuss the bases of the current crisis, including (1) a decline in K-12 education, (2) the increased federal- and state-level politicization and bureaucratization of higher education, and (3) a network of closely related prevailing philosophies. And he will offer a judgment call about how it will play out.
